The Yeah Yeah Yeahs- Maps

This is the video for The Yeah Yeah Yeahs- Maps. This is an extremely simple video but made effective by the performance of the lead vocalist. She puts a lot of emotion into her performance which is what i hope to achieve from my actress.
The long panning shot of the room works really well to set the scene of the video and immediately shows the tone of the video. I really like the idea of having a long introduction to a music video, to draw the audience in from the very beginning. This video's use of having the introduction of a long shot of the surroundings is an effective way of doing this.

Panning over such a small crowd makes the song feel even more intimate and personal, thus making it more emotional. The fact that the audience in the video is so far away from the stage also gives a sense of detachment to the crowd and the song.

In this sequence, there is a series of close up shots for all three members while just the music is playing. This is a good way to introduce all band members, as some videos focus too much on just the lead singer. All the members have very simple outfits, typical of this genre of music and the age and style of the band and music.

This is the first shot we get of the bands as a whole and it is quite an impressive way of doing so, with a long shot of the bright lights framing the stage and from the perspective of a member of the audience in the video.

I like the way in these shots the glare of the lights from the stage somewhat obscures the singer, creating a nice glow around her.
I really like this panning shot, that starts with a shot of the audience out of focus and ends to being behind the singer. This gives a nice perspective from the singer's point of view.
These transitional close up shots of the lights are a nice way of signifying the change in colour to the set.
I really like this sequence of just a shot of the singer with the lights changing over her. It is a nice way of adding more interest to the scene.
This is a lovely shot as you can really see the emotion affecting her. The soft glow of the lights adds a nice layer as well.
This is a nice panning shot of the audience, who rather paradoxically to the scene before it, seem unaffected by the song or the singer's performance.
The way her hair is covering her eyes in this close up works really well in this shot. I like the extreme close up to her face as well.

I like how the video comes full circle at the end, with pulling out of the shot of the stage, to the beck of the hall again.

Robyn- Dancing on My Own

This is the video for Robyn- Dancing on My Own. Again, this video is pretty simplistic, but what i liked about it was the way the mood was captured via the lighting. Also, the use of several different locations intercut was very inspirational.

The dark lighting here mixed with the red is very striking and contrasts well with the brightness of the other shots. I also really like the blurry shots of the crowd dancing that opens the video.

The multitude of angles and shots works really well here and i love how it is interlinked with the next location by having the same movements in both.

The use of the space here also works well; its cuts from a long shot to a close up in quick succession.

i really like the use of different locations, using a medium shot of the singer, but the same routine so the transitions between them work well.
These crowd scenes are effective as it is reflecting the lyrics of the song, of being on your own.

There is a theme of the dancing the whole way through the video which makes the transitions between locations and scenes flow smoothly. The singer also has a simple yet well choreographed dance routine that she performs throughout the video.

The bright lights brought in in these shots work well with the climax of the song. Filming the back of the singer is also really effective as if give the impression you are part of the crowd.

30 Seconds to Mars- Attack

This is the video for 30 Seconds to Mars- Attack. It is rather a simple video, made impressive by the clever use of effects and lighting. As I am on a small budget, these are the sort of tactics I should consider.

I really like this establishing shot as the bright lights that flash illuminate the scene briefly, adding intrigue to the shot. It also fits in well with the slightly dark tone to the song.  Also, having it far away and the pillars cornering in the band's instruments makes the video seem more intimate. Having the video take place in a warehouse i think works really well with the gritty tone of the song.

I really like this shot as the lens flare caused by the light is really effect and goes well with the dark green colours of the video.

The camera angles used helps make the simple concept visually interesting. I really like this shot as the sepia colours and the plain background highlights his key features and his heavy makeup accentuates this even more.

I like the use of words quickly flickering over the screen and goes well with the erie tone of the video.
The constant colour shifts in this video really work well with the powerful song. The constant movement of the camera and different angles makes the video flow well and compliment the music.

The use of odd scenes in black and white is really effective and i would like to use this in my video.
I really like the scratchy effect used and the way it seems like it had been drawn over. This is a constant effect throughout the video and reflects the surreal feel to the music.
I love the effects used in this close up, making it seem like it had been painted over. The fact that they constantly shift and change over the shot, adding a jittery feel to the video.

I like the way in this video some of the footage seems to be prosperously damaged, to create this colourful blurred effect flickering over the footage.

The Horrors- Whole New Way

This is the music video for The Horrors- Whole New Way. i really like this video as, like The XX, it has really simple effects that work really well and are very atmospheric.

The opening sets the scene for the video by having an array of shots or plants or flowers, with some scenes of the landscape. This is similar a location i would like to use.

The video has effects of flashes of colour over it which makes the video stand out and adds interest to a possibly dull shot.

The first time the audience sees the lead singer, half way through the shot, it is over-lapped with an other shot of him singing. This works really well and is an effect i will consider using.
The other members of the band are not shown playing their instruments, but are utilised by being in the back of shots.
The video is integrated by more shots of the landscape to add diversity
In the video, there seems to be one main shot of the lead singer singing which is cut back to throughout the video.

i really liked this sequence of shots, with a fast cut between a long shot of the band standing on one side of the shot, then to the other, then one of them standing closer to the camera in the middle.

Shots of the other band members are shown throughout the video, in a variety of different shots.

There are different angled shots of the lead singer, but not of him singing, which in integrated as flashing clips throughout the video.

i liked the focus of this shot, with the silhouette of the hands, one in focus and one out.

the panning down shot of all the band members is a really beautiful shot, as it really shows off the colour effect used and the setting.

i would really like to try using this colour effect in my video.

this panning shot of all the band members legs is really effective, with the sun light shining through the gaps.
